N1 Reykjavik Open - Round 1 Report (English)

The Reykjavik open 2012 started yesterday at 4:00 pm at the probably most spectuclar playing venue for an open chess tournament ever.  It´s Harpa, the beatiful new music and conference center in Reykjavik.

Óttarr Proppé (member of city council of Reykjavik), Ogmundur Jonasson (minister of internal affairs), Katrín Jakobsson (minister of education), Sigríður Ingibjörg Ingadóttir (parlament member) and Su Ge (ambassador of China)

The opening cermony was attended by their excellencies Katrin Jakobsdottir the minister of education, science and culture, Ogmundur Jonasson, the minister of interior, Óttarr Proppé member of the city council and the chairman of Reykjavik Chess Academy, Su Ge the embassador of the People´s Republic of China and Gunnar Bjornsson, the president of the Icelandic Chess Federation.

And it is: 1. e2-e4!

After musician „K K," who is one of the most famous singers in Iceland, enchanted the guests and city council member Óttarr Proppé played the first move for GM Hou Yifan, the reigning world women´s chess champion, against the many times Icelandic women´s  chess champion, WFM Gudlaug Thorsteinsdottir.

The round started smoothly and most results were „according to the script," with very few upsets, top of which was the draw by Viktor Thorell (with black) against GM Stelios Halkias, who is ranked 550 ELO points higher! And a stunning win by one of the most talented Icelandic Young players, Dagur Ragnarsson (1858) against Canadian IM David Cummings 2341.

Dagur Ragnarsson won David Cummings

In the evening, after the first round, some of the more daring chess players put on their football boots in the annual match between the Best (of Iceland) against the Rest (of the World). The game ended in an exciting 3-3 draw.  Among the spectators were Macauley Peterson and IM Irina Krush.
